Carbon Data Services

What do we offer?

The Carbon Intensity of electricity being used in any area of the grid. Understand how much carbon is being emitted by using electricity.

The Fuel Mix of the electricity being used in any area of the grid. Understand where the power used is coming from.

The Marginal Emissions in each grid region. Understand how choosing to consume or not consume power will affect the carbon emitted.

Real time data to see the current state of the electricity system.

Historic data to identify trends, calculate emissions and evidence sustainability.

Forecast data to plan your next 24 hours of electricity usage, and longer term to plan sustainability projects.

The highest granularity data available, see commercially significant differences across regions and countries.

Get data across the UK and EU27, with more to come soon.

Working across the globe to empower decarbonisation.

Constantly validated and checked, our models are regularly updated to provide the highest accuracy possible within the industry.

Trusted and compliant methodologies using the same real time data sources that system operators use to manage their network operations.

Machine learning algorithms provide the best forecasts of production and demand across the network.

Avoid Unintentional Greenwashing

Most companies miss-report their GHG Scope 2 Emissions by up to 30%. De-risk your sustainability reporting and energy portfolio, avoid being caught out by changing reporting standards, and align with best practices of organisations such as the CDP’s GHG protocols and the UK Government’s Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting Act.

EV Fleet Management

  • Understand, manage and optimise the actions of Electric Vehicles and EV Fleets to minimise carbon emitted.
  • Support lowest carbon routing
  • Report on annual, monthly and weekly EV fleet emissions & CO2 avoidance

Scope 2 Reporting

  • Most companies miss-report their GHG Scope 2 Emissions by an average of 30%.
  • Align with best practices of  CDP, GHG and the UK's Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting Act.
  • Use 24/7 emission factors to report more accurately

Asset Carbon Avoidance

  • Monitor, evidence and optimise the carbon avoidance of an energy asset.
  • Calculated for every half hour. Understand historic carbon avoidance, real-time performance or forecast a year ahead.
  • Compatible with storage, PV, wind and more.

Is your data compliant with the reporting standards I use?

Yes! In fact, many standards, such as the CDP’s GHG emissions, and the UK Government’s Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting Act specify you should use time specific and location specific emission factors if possible.

What is the price for access to your data?

This depends on what data you need and how you would like to interact with it, so no two projects are exactly the same. Please reach out to us and we will make sure you can get exactly what you need in a way that works for you!

What is available by API?

Everything. Carbon intensity, fuel mix and marginal intensity are all available for each region, every half an hour of the day. They are available historically, in real time and forecast for 24 hours in the future.

How accurate is your data?

We are constantly working to make sure our data is the most accurate in the industry. We are always validating our models against metered and measured data so that we can provide accurate signals for decarbonisation.

Where does your data come from?

Many of the data inputs we use are the same as those that go into the grid operations rooms of system operators. We use a combination of publicly available data, proprietary data that we have access to, and our cutting edge models to provide our customers with the most actionable carbon data possible.

What is the granularity of your data?

In Great Britain, we break the data down into MSOAs (a census unit of about 5000 households), which means we have carbon data for 8000 regions in GB. We calculate a carbon intensity for each of these units every half an hour of the day; that's over 140,000,000 carbon signals per year. A similar level of granularity will be coming to the EU over the next year. Currently we offer half-hourly national resolution data for EU.

Is there really a difference in gCO2/kWh between regions a few miles apart?

Yes! And potentially a very significant one. Carbon intensity is not about distance, but about grid connectivity, where  power is being generated and when. A few miles or minutes can mean the difference between CO2-free and high carbon power, and you can’t know that until you have data like ours.

London’s Burning (fossil fuels)
London’s Burning (fossil fuels)

In collaboration with the Centre for Net Zero, Octopus Energy's not-for-profit spin out, we examined the impact of heat pump uptake between 2021 and 2031. For London Climate Action Week 2021 we visualised and compared a winter's peak in 2021, where Londoners are primarily kept warm by gas, to a winter's peak in 2031 where the rollout of 40,000 heat pumps shift heating demand from the gas network to the electricity network.
